I don't know why they should be any different. There are many amateurs
who are generally better than pros at the game of golf, but just do not
choose to be professional.
However, there are not many amateurs with a clubhead swingspeed much in
excess of 110mph, which is basically where the distance comes from, and
is almost a necessity to play and succeed in the pro ranks. The distance
any player can play is basically in proportion to his clubhead
speed...and if you are referring to an 'average' amateur whose clubhead
speed is of the order of 80-90mph then I guess his distance places him
about 20-30% shorter than a good pro.
But the average amateur has a handicap, which allows him more strokes
than the pro for the same overall distance......so why should there be
any difference in distance played at all?
Just my $0.02

David,
What's the situation with multiple tees in Australia? In the UK, all
men have to play off the same tees. If you are a short hitter and can't
reach in regulation, that's hard luck. Your handicap takes account of
the extra strokes you need to reach the green.
I've always thought that a well designed course should be enjoyable and
playable by everyone from the same tees, regardless of ability or
hitting distance.
I'm a pretty average hitter. Played yesterday and used every club from
3w to LW for my approach shots. If someone was 10 yards longer or
shorter, they would still have a good spread of approach shots. Do
these course with multiple tees tend to have very similar lengths for
each hole from a particular set of tees?
Like most old courses, there is no room to lengthen the course anyway,
so we'd never have the chance to experiment with multiple tees.
However, the winning scores for our big scratch tournaments don't seem
to have changed much over the last 50 years or so, so I suppose length
isn't the most important factor in course design.
