I couldn't agree more. It is absolutely stupid to have an event with
Tiger, Vijay, Ernie, and Phil playing, and be treated to two hours of
Duffy Waldorf, because of the luck of the tee time draw. It would be
a huge help to the ratings to show all of the top dozen or so players,
along with crowd favorites like JD and JB, regardless of how well they
are playing.
I don't understand why all the networks don't do this. I'm aware that
there was outrage and anguish expressed by Tiger-hating purists when
they showed Tiger's round on tape delay one time, in preference to the
live action. But there is no need to do this; they have more than
enough time to show all the big names along with the interesting live
action, if they would just show the damn shots, instead of all the
fiddling around before the shots. It takes about ten seconds to show
most shots from address to result, but usually they have to spend a
minute or two explaining that it's harder to get it to spin from the
rough, and then show the player and his caddy deliberating for a
minute or two on which way the wind is blowing. Putts are even worse;
the viewer learns absolutely nothing by watching a pro look at a putt
from all angles.
ESPN proved that just spending ten seconds each to watch Michelle hit
her shots could be very entertaining, without missing any shots from
the live action. It probably doesn't even cost that much extra; the
big salaries are paid to the announcers, not the cameramen, and a
couple of interns could handle the editing, since there is plenty of
time to correct mistakes with taped coverage.
While I agree with your points, the coverage for this event is pathetic!
The virtual pairing was interesting, but it would have been better if
more coverage was offered, imo.
