The guys I play with, all in the 16 - 24 handicap range, consider 400-425
yard par 4s as normal par "5s" and we're all using big drivers. I read
somewhere that the average drive for the typical golfer is less that +200
yards and holding steady. My index is 16 and it usually takes me a driver,
3 wood, and short chip to get on the green of the 410 yard, slightly
uphill, 16th hole on my home course. I guess I should try to get my money
back for my 460cc Ping G2.
Royce Brook (East Course) in Central NJ has 4 holes over 400 yards (from the
Greens). Slope for Green Tees is 131. Hole #1 starts you off at 437. And
hole #9 is 430. Funny thing is that I can frequently get on or near the
green on the first hole in 2, but rarely get on #9 in 2. And neither seems
either up hill or down hill. Though #9 is a slight dogleg left, where
you're hitting over long rye grass that you have to carry for most of your
drive. So the fact it's a dogleg makes it that much more difficult. Hole
#1 is more open, so you can just wail away. On #9, you're hitting away from
the deep rye that forms the left (short) side... so you end up aiming right.
It gets you away from trouble... but make the hole much longer.
So I guess that 430-440 is doable in a straight shot (driver and 4/5
iron)... but put a bend on the hole with trouble on the short side, and it's
not nearly so reachable.
