Thinking

I agree that the holy grail of what to think about during our swing is
"the target".
Watching my progress from terrible to bad, it is interesting to see
some changes. I still need to think about my takeaway, and expect
to think about it for some time to come. Gradually I was able to
shift some of my thought to "hitting the ball", as my take-away became
more natural. Now I am graduating to actually thinking about my aim
as I am swinging, and it seems to be effective when I can do it. From
my perspective, I only see "the target" as my next step.
That doesn't mean I don't ever need to think about "don't swing too
hard", or "Make sure I follow through correctly", or "Stay balanced".
But those don't seem to be progressive steps.
