In most competitions the Committee generally 'appoints' the marker by default on acceptance of the marker's signature when the card is handed in. It is implied in acceptance of the marker's signature that the Committee has retrospectively 'appointed' him to act as marker. A Committee will often generalise the appointment of a 'fellow competitor' as marker in the 'Conditions of Competition', without being specific about it. Nevertheless, the Committee is perfectly entitled not to accept a signature from a person not entitled to be a marker.
