A few facts.
According to research conducted by the National Golf Foundation at
http://www.ngf.org
the number of rounds played across the USA dropped in 2001, again in
2002, and again in 2003.

In 2004, it rose just 0.7%

I haven't seen hard numbers yet for 2005, but have read several places
where the # of rounds played is down 15% from last year.
