I understand, but that really has little to do with it. You
can play in under 4 hours and shoot 125. It's not all the
ball striking that takes up 4 hours, it's all the other stuff.

It's not unheard of for folks who do either.

I don't mean to be insulting. Quite the opposite, I'm trying to
open peoples eyes that I don't really think understand just how slow
they are playing. They get started on courses (of all prices) where
it can easily take 5+ hours to play a round of golf and they think
that is "normal" so 4.5 seems "quick". It's not, not by a long shot.
I've played very casual rounds, with lots of lost balls and all
manner of bad shots, and they took 3:45. A course which asks you to
play in 4:20 is being VERY generous.

I agree, and this is what causes long rounds. You have to say
something
ultimately. A course here specifies 30 seconds to make a shot. But
I've played with such folks, and I know your frustration. I've tried
every diplomatic means of which I can think to suggest that he just
"hit the darn ball".

About all you can do. At some point you just have to tell him that
his selfish, self centered attitude ruins the fun for you.
To some extent the courses themselves are to blame. There should
almost
be a "market" for different paces. I'm sure many a course could make a
profit advertising that they won't "rush" players around and that they
"allow" 4.5 hour rounds. Equally, I suspect a well run course that
advertises 3:45 rounds could do quite well too.
