Late starter secret

Shot 79 or so today--I could easily have shot par. Playing with three
5 or lower handicappers, it was helpful to copy their tempo.

But I hit it consistently and scored with those guys, they gave me no
strokes, because I have been developing a theory for how someone like
me, a very late starter who has taken a dozen lessons, knows how to
grip, setup, and make a proper backswing, can produce a consistent
stroke-- can consistently propel the ball on the target line the proper
distance, keep it in the fairway off the tee, advance the ball with
fairway woods, and hit greens with middle irons. It worked today--and
it will work for you.

The problem for late starters is that we never grooved a good swing--
and likely we will never will! Consequently, we can't do all the right
things in the proper sequence consistently. Sometimes we get it right
and the ball goes straight and long, but often we get all screwed up,
do everything right except complete our turn, we never achieve the
correct top position, and the ball goes sideways.

So what is the answer? It is to rehearse the top position. Just take
your grip and stance, then lift the club to the top position that feels
like "go." Take a few seconds to find that feeling--and remember it,
then do it.

The reason this works: for for each of us there is a specific
position--a place our arms and hands must be, the place that triggers
the correct downswing sequence--legs, hips, then arms, then shoulders.
You will feel it when it is right-- something sorta clicks. When you
feel it, don't even look at your grip, don't make any adjustment, just
return to the setup position, and swing! You have loaded your
subconscious mind--and it knows!

Do that all the way around and if you can make a few putts, you can
shoot par or lower.

BTW, the big secret to putting was revealed in the last Golf
Digest--NEVER rest the putter on the ground. Always keep the weight in
your hands. Your stroke will be smooth. Lay that sucker on the ground
and you will struggle to NOT have a jerky motion. Imitate Jack
Nicklaus. Take if from me, a formerly terrible putter-- this works.
