Hear it, fear it. See it, flee it.

Seven or eight years ago, there was a highly publicized case
in the DFW area of a high school football player being struck
and killed by lightning from a storm that was several miles
away. The skies were clear where they were practicing.

After that happened, I got to thinking about how many times
I had watched a thunderstorm pass by a game that my kids
were playing in. Nobody would think of stopping the game
unless it was raining, or the lightning strikes were scary
close. After that incident I would pull my kids off the
field any time I saw lightning, and never got an
argument (because most other parents did the same thing).

I follow the same rule myself if I am playing golf. If
I see the lightning, I leave the course, even if that means
giving up half of a round that I paid $100 for, which
happened to me in Tahoe one time.

Now, do I leave just on hearing thunder? No. But I
never said I was smart.
