I have a general coffee question - I bought a can of store-brand
Columbian, a dark roast. It tastes ok going down, but there's this
weird decaf-like aftertaste that I don't get with stuff like Folgers
(it is NOT decaf by the way). I realize that none of this stuff is
high-end coffee, but what makes the store brand taste like sh*t like
that? Do they use a lesser bean?

Probably. Folgers actually isn't that bad and surprisingly stacks up
against so-called "hihg-end" coffees. There are some truly superior
coffees out there, but they are not necessarily linked to price.

I think the best buy on coffee for reasonable coffee is 8 O' Clock
coffee.

I agree - coffee is like wine in that extra $ spent do not neccesarily
mean better taste. Speaking of bad coffee, I fear for the rest of
the country becuase Dunkin Donuts has aggressive plans to spread the
brand out of the northeast. If you like watery tasteless coffee,
you people will flip over DD.- Hide quoted text -

Actually, I find Dunkin Donuts to be one of the higher quality
coffees.

I think so many people doctor their coffee up to such a degree that
they need a strong or bitter coffee to break through all that cream
and sugar.

When you drink coffee black, you learn in a hurry what is crap, and
what actually has some quality flavors. DD, is a milder coffee, and
that's okay. The beans they sell directly smell great.

And, of course, people have different tastes, too. I remember my
colleague used to bring all these teas and they had no taste to them.
After quitting drinking all my highly sugared flavored drinks, I was
actually able to taste the tea and realized it was my palet, and not
the tea that was the problem.

I've been a black coffee drinker for years...I think to my tastes DD
is just not robust enough.- Hide quoted text -

For coffee to taste its best, you need to use good water and clean
equipment. Its good to have several brands/varieties on hand because
your as your tastebuds get used to one type, it begins to lose its
flavor. Often, the "best cup of coffee you've ever had" is just a
different type from the one you've been drinking the last year.

Please listen to what I am saying--I am from Seattle!!

While IAWTP, the bean roast, essential oils that remain once stored and
ground, the grind, and the brewing method are also important. A good
steam press is better than a Mr. Coffee filtered brew any day of the week.

I'm glad I'm not a connoisseur -- it sounds hard!
