Went pheasant hunting yesterday with a buddy.  We crapped out much of
the day and on the way home stopped by an abandoned farmstead when we
saw a couple hens from the gravel road.  Snuck up downwind and I
positioned to shoot while buddy flushed.  No less than six flew
directly over me...rarely are we that lucky with our positions...but
they were all hens.

Then I hear a gun fire...and again...and again...and again.  Walked
into the trees and my  buddy had popped four rabbits.  He started
collecting them and I said to let me hold his weapon(both of us had 12
gauge shotguns).  So I've got his shotgun in my left by the forestock,
mine in my right hand by the forestock, and him commenting that he
thinks he's cleared the rabbit population out in this farmstead.  Just
then a fifth rabbit pops out and takes off full speed.  He yells
"SHOOOOOT!" as I react to do so as well.  I toss my weapon slightly to
grab it by the stock and trigger with one hand, hit the saftey button,
aim one-handed, and fire at a rabbit on a dead run, now 30 feet away,
all the while holding his shotgun in my left hand.

BLAM!!

Dead rabbit.

Great shot, if I do say so myself.

Didn't know it was possible to crap out hunting pheasant in Iowa.
I've hunted Nebraska and South Dakota, but everyone always told me,
"Ya gotta hunt Iowa."  I feel better now.-

Lots of hens around. The roosters that are left are wily (wiley?) by
now...six weeks into season. They get up way ahead or run ahead. Our
biggest problem have been the wet May/June periods, during hatch.
Apparently the babies cant take wet and we've had two of he wettests M/
J's in a while. Another problem is the coyotes. Much of our cover is
what they call buffer strips...grass planted on both sides of creeks
to reduce runoff/erosion. Coyotes just work their way down these 90'
strips like a buffet.

I've heard SD is WAAAYYY better than what we have for birds...lots of
farm raised birds released up there from what I hear.
