What really makes no sense to me is that otherwise intelligent people,
year after year after year, look at the poles and compare individual
rankings as if single-game instances of transitivity should matter
more than an entire body of work.

Yep, summerstorm needs to pick a new song.  Sagarin had Iowa
ranked WAAAAAY ahead of PSU before this game, and I don't
expect that's changed.

He probably should pick a new song because it makes too much sense and
is already flying over most heads. This is rsfc afterall.

I think you're confusing "masturbatory pre-season rankings" with
"body of work." The "body of work" is what had Iowa ranked
so far ahead of PSU.
