Ok, now I'm really confused.
Tom Enright pointed out to be in another thread that this new plan *won't* do what I thought it would.
See, I'd like to see health care unpinned from employers - every citizen gets good, basic coverage via the government (it
becomes
a *right*), and we also have the option of purchasing additional, higher-quality care privately.
My thinking is that this will help to unpin the working class from large corporations and companies - I know many folks that
could
and probably should go out and do what they're doing on their own - but they continue to work for company X because they "don't
want to lose <their> benefits." - specifically, health care, which is a bear if you're an independent contractor, or work with a
coop, or run a small business.
Apparently, this plan would actually strengthen the requirement for small business owners wrt providing health care for
employees,
by increasing fines for those that do not - see, I want to encourage folks to start small businesses, not *discourage* 'em, for
Pete's sake - uberSHEESH!
So, (especially supporters of this bill) - could you help a brutha out? - who will *gain* health care under this thing that
didn't
have it before? Why aren't we just rolling out basic health care for the masses? Why are we still planning on sticking
employers
with a mandatory duty to provide health care?
The problem in my mind -- I don't support socialistic health care,
but if you're going to do it anyway -- how do you retain market forces?
We've all seen what tightly run government economies do. Complain
all you want about free market greed, etc., but there has to be some
incentive for efficiency and a somewhat objective sense of a cost/
benefit ratio.
The efficiency of merely giving away money -- welfare vs. private
charities -- has already been demonstrated.
Why don't we check out one of the countries where national health
care works much better than our current system in the US?
That's the debate, not a proven point. I try to be reasonable and
you put on your asshat.
We don't have market forces in the current system, except at
a very abstract and distant level. We need to get the market
forces down to the immediate consumer of services level. But
I don't think that's possible.
