Zacklee....There will be no need to outlaw private insurance, the
government is going to put them out of business.  His sister is
correct, just for the wrong reasons.
Dude, when you find yourself saying 'Exactly' or anything close to it in
response to Heiman... take a step back, and realize that you're wrong.
Beyond that... as an intellectual exercise, try to
understand *why* the public option will put the
private insurance companies out of business, if in
fact it will.
That's easy - the public option doesn't have to "price" realistically
to stay in business.  In fact, they can price at *0* if they so choose
- b/c the revenues that'll run it won't come from the customers -
it'll come from all of us.
And?
The only reason private insurers get by is by charging
healthy younger customers the same rates they do older,
less healthy ones, through employer-based plans. The
revenues don't come from those who need the coverage,
they come from those who don't.
Their revenues come from their *customers*, Chris.
Who are held captive to participate by their employers.

Nice try.

It's true. When I was in my 20s, there's no way I
would have elected to pay for health insurance.
I would have *loved* to have had that money in
cash. But I didn't have a choice.

Just depends on who you work for....I've always worked for myself so I
don't know firsthand about such things, but my wife has always had the
choice.

she has the choice to opt out of her portion, but not the subsidized
part....many people pay like 50-200 dollars a month...their employer
pays 5-6 times this....I've never known any employer to let people opt
out of their share *and* get the money in salary for what the employer
would otherwise pay.

If my wife's employer subsidized our insurance 5-6 times that would
mean it was costing 3,000-3,600/month for a family of three with no
serious health issues....I seriously doubt that.

then your wife has crappy health insurance....they appear to be
subsidizing it far less than most peoples plans.......

Yeah, we know that...and she works for a large national commercial
realty company. It's still cheaper than we can get on our own.
