I like it. I just wish there'd be a drag-n-drop mechanism, a way to
download pics (from different albums) to the Web Albums directly, and
interactivity with web 2.0. Perhaps in the next version. But as an
organizer, and for editing pictures it's top notch.
By the way, this would more legitimately be called Google Linux, as it's
using the Linux kernel (same as their smartphone OS Android) - they're
going to redo the primary UI and ditch most of the apps in favor of
their web-based alternatives, but it's no more a new "OS" than, say,
Gnome was.
Linux sucks, and I hate Linux snobs that think they're cool because
they "know better than the masses". Yes, aesthetics and SIMPLICITY
OF USE are advantageous attributes, they should learn that.
Linux isn't for everyone - however, there are some purposes for which it's ideally suited. I like OpenBSD (actually originated as a Unix variant, IIRC, but whatever) - but I also often have to run a virtual instance of Backtrack (a linux distro). I prefer *nix based systems for server roles as well, and the (thus far) lack of viral/malware entities is a bonus. I'm a big fan of Snort... you can run that off Windows, but I prefer the OpenBSD/Snort distro.
And I keep Windows on a home PC (laptop) to make TSO happy. And I use it as well (using it right now, actually) - I can run Photoshop in linux via wine, but I'd sooner just run it off her laptop. Windows XP was pretty damn good - and Vista isn't bad once you turn the "are you sure you really want to do this" prompts off.
I loaded up a beta version of Windows 7 for a week or so, and was impressed with it's performance.
Cheers. <and I'm a happy G1 (googlephone) owner>
How is it? My friend has one and he's very happy with it. I haven't
played around with it though.
Yeah, it's pretty nice - much nicer now that they've finally released the "cupcake" update. It integrates well with my system - on a PC I tend to use Thunderbird/Lightning for email/calendar sitting on top of Gmail and Google Calendar - so it all integrates very nicely (If I enter a new appointment in my phone or PC, it shows up in the other - same with mail - if I get new mail it comes to both, if I delete off one, it deletes off the other).
Cupcake gave me the ability to check and delete multiple mail items, which is nice - and the use of my camera as a video recorder as well, which is cool - I've heard it upgraded us to stereo bluetooth as well, but I haven't tested that, or checked if it'll stream music via bluetooth.
My #1 complaint is a lack of adobe support - neither reader nor flash thus far. There is a third-party app for .pdf files, but it won't open larger files - so I can't use it as an e-book reader, which I'd like to do. They demonstrated flash at a big convention nearly a year ago, but *still* haven't released it.
I like the integrated YouTube app, though - to tell the truth, other than work/business stuff, I mostly use the phone to browse the web (and basically every site comes in great - ESPN, yahoo sports, etc - one big complaint, a lot of sites that offer a mobile version automatically direct me to that, and it's a pain to workaround to the actual site - I don't want the mobile version, ya know?). Plus Sudoku - I play that a lot as well. Really, there are a ton of good apps, I just haven't explored enough - I'm generally within reaching distance of a PC or laptop, so I don't need it other than when I'm out or in my car.
GPS is cool, although I don't think the available free app is that great - I've heard the for-purchase one is better, but haven't tried it out myself.
Love (absolutely love) the slide out keyboard - that's the one thing I hated about the Iphone - just didn't like the virtual keyboard, and it takes up so much of the screen...
Pluseth, I can load basically any music format on it just by dragging it over from my PC - I know you can do the same with the Iphone, but you have to convert, and you're essentially violating their terms of use - speaking of which, ditto that for tethering a laptop (getting internet via the phone when no wireless is available) - it's much easier with the Google phone, and you aren't violating an agreement like when you jailbreak an Iphone.
Uh, all in all, I'd give it 3/4 stars - I'd only give the Iphone 2.5/4.
Cheers.
PS: I almost forgot - battery life ain't great - in fact, pretty bad. But I'm in the habit of throwing it on the charger every other night or so anyway, so it hasn't been much of an issue.
