Sell? Are you TRYING to be a jerk, James?
Nope, stupid certificates like the Microsoft certifications, PMI,
aren't that meaningful. Many of these evolved right after the cold
war ended when layed off DoD bureaucrats and had to find a business
nitch that allowed them to sucker money from other professionals and
industry.
I worked for Oracle as a senior DBA consultant for four years. In that
time I didn't meet one other Oracle person who was a certified DBA.
Those certs were for the rubes on the outside -- Oracle wanted us on
the job making $$ and not taking courses and tests.
After ten years now as an Oracle DBA consultant (no longer with
Oracle), my
opinion is that I'd rather have a guy with 3 years experience than a
newbie
with a cert. All that paper means is that you managed to memorize a
bunch of facts and spit them back for a test. If I had to choose
between a candidate with 1 year experience and a cert and another
1-year guy without one, I'd lean towards the cert because at least he
did memorize a few things that might come in handy.
The tech interview would still carry more weight with me, though.
20 projects at a time. She works for AT&T DataCom and builds data
centers. She wanted to get the cert to better her standing with the
company since they are gonna lay of 25,000 people this year. She's
doing this on her own.
That's too bad she didn't make it. She's already doing what sounds like
the work of five people.
I hope she makes it next time.

No one affects the game like Pat White. He's dynamic, he's dangerous,
he's the perfect weapon. If we're choosing sides and I've got first
pick in the ultimate college football pickup game, I'm taking Pat White.
And I'm winning.
