=A0 =A0 Well, there was 1861-65. Not to mention the years
leading up to
it. And Reconstruction.
That was why I included "essentially" in my statement - Women's
Suffrage was another - so was the Temperance Movement. And
segregation
lasted until the 50s.
To me, essentially has a different meaning......YMMV.
I could have used a better word I guess.
AFAIK liberals did not exist until after WWII - at least not=A0 Uh, unionists, anarchists, communists, socialists, etc
in name
and with no visible agenda.
were all
present and accounted for.
I was in the South, they were not (or not seen or heard).
Fewer in the South, but they probably weren't reported as
much,
either.
They just were not visible - Hodding Carter was an exception.
Not to argue segregation but blacks were happy and there was no
trouble between black and white. I worked at a florish with a
black,
at a laundry with blacks and my news paper route was blacks.
Were they happy or just in their place?
They were obviously "in their place" but they were happy. If you
don't
know any better you can be happy. I spent time with them on my
paper
route - I played softball with them a couple of times a week.
Going to
different schools or unequal was never mentioned. They got
unhappy
when people started telling them they should be unhappy. I'll
speak of
facts but I won't argue segregation.
How would you do if you and your children were
"in your place" (below others) in a society?
Would you tell your children any different, or
would you keep them happy?
s
I would never have felt below anyone in any society.
Hugh
But it's ok if other people are "in their place"
so long as they appear to be happy?
s
No one asked me to make the rules.
Hugh
No, sir. I believe you did make the rules, and maybe
you still are for some people.
If I made the rules this country would be in a heckuva lot better
shape than it is now.
WWII would have been the last war unless we were attacked, no deficit
spending, no Great Society sponsored by government, SS would allow
private investment with mandatory guidelines, all welfare would be
handled by churches, no medicare and no Medicaid so everyone would be
on equal footing ( I might allow health clinincs for the poor so they
wouldn't crowd real doctors and hospitals) - that would do for
starters.
I would call it the Get Off Your Ass/Quit Spreading Your Legs and Go
To Work Program.
Hugh
That is the best thing I have seen poasted in this here chatroom in a long
while. Well said Hugh.
