Amazingly enough, I wasn't.

Somehow I expected frantic turkeys to be running around in the
background with people, meat cleavers in hand, chasing them down and
hacking them.



The East Coast elite reaction to it made me think of a story a friend of
mine told me years ago. My friend is from Oneonta, NY and went to school
there at SUNY Oneonta. One of his best college buds was from Queens, or
Brooklyn, or somewhere deep in the city and was a classic "city hick" -- a
lifelong urbanite who nevertheless knew as much about life outside the city
as a denzen of Butcher Hollow, KY (Loretta Lynne's home) knew about NYC.

One weekend my friend was driving himself and his bud back to school from a
weekend in NYC, and they were cruising through the upstate NY countryside
when his bud suddenly yelled "Stop the car! Stop the fucking car!!!"

My friend hit the brakes and pulled over, and as he told me, was looking
around for whatever had caused his bud to yell like that. And while he was
trying to figure it out his bud points and yells again, "Look at that! A
_cow_ right by the road!! A FUCKING COW right by the FUCKING ROAD!!!!"

And indeed, there was a cow in a field munching the grass just outside its
fence, as cows have done since men put them inside fences.

City people just don't "get" country.
