Here's a thought with two "ifs":
1) BYU goes undefeated
2) Vanderbilt goes undefeated and wins the SEC title game
Would that possibly be the lowest ranked pre-season pair
(BYU 19th, Vanderbilt unranked) that ever played in the
national title game? BYU is already 7th and just need to
avoid losing, while Vanderbilt's schedule is ranked 15th
toughest yet could be run by a consistent team.
Sure, it would require a few losses by specific teams,
but given the events of recent years, no "top team" is
safe anymore.
Pretty sure Vandy's never even won the SEC title
.
