Rong.

And in October of 2006, the Anchorage Daily News
reported that Palin said the following about
creationism at a debate:

"Teach both. You know, don't be afraid of
information....Healthy debate is so important and it's
so valuable in our schools. I am a proponent of
teaching both. And you know, I say this too as
the daughter of a science teacher. Growing up with
being so privileged and blessed to be given a lot of
information on, on both sides of the
subject--creationism and evolution. It's been
a healthy foundation for me. But don't be afraid of
information and let kids debate both sides."

Are you afraid of honest debate, Ralph?

*I* believe in evolution, and *I'm* not afraid of the
debate.

Most grade school teachers I've come across don't foster
"debate" among their students, no matter which side of
the political fence they sit on.

They're teaching evolution in *grade school*?

I certainly hope so. It's pretty moronic if they don't.

How so?

It's basic biology education - along the lines of the food
chain, predator-prey relationships, the cycle of how
populations balance with available resources, etc.

Not teaching evolution would be a gap in that basic biology
education - and all of that is something that should be
covered in basic kids life science type classes.

In GRADE SCHOOL?

I think they should definitely teach about evolution in grade
school. It's pretty fundamental. It's a good tool for
understanding an awful lot of what goes on around us,
including biology, environment, anthropology, psychology, etc.

I agree with you and Aaron here, so you may want to start
worrying, or something.

Any of you with children: Are they being taught evolution in
*grade school*? Because we were not when I was in school.

Were you taught how thunder and lightning worked, or just
about Thor and his hammer?

At least I wasn't taught about the Flying Spaghetti Monster...

If that makes you feel better.

I hope you're getting the point that evolution is an
import, sensible, and widespread part of grade school
education.

No.

Okay. You're an idiot.

How so? My observations and experience tell me that it is not a
widespread part of grade school education. My experience tells me
that grade school is a little early for most children to get the whole
concept. I call bull*** on whoever told me that it was being taught
in kindergarten. I'll note that Mendelian Genetics forms a basis of
our understanding of how evolution works, but is not evolution.

Yes, it is evolution. As is natural selection... and the apple falling
off the tree is gravity.

No one is claiming kindergarteners are learning the nuts and bolts, low
level science. They are (at least in my kids school, and in the one I
attended) basic concepts of evolution

Just explaining THAT things are related and HOW things are related
is a hugely important thing to set the stage for learning more, and
for understanding astronomy, physics, and engineering.
