Long story short, it's pretty cool so far.  I'm not a member of the
Apple cult.  Well, not yet anyway.

I thought about getting an iphone but AT&T sucks and iphone battery
life is notorious.  I did some research and decided to get a
Blackberry Pearl, which meets all the needs I have without the
reported problems of the iPhone. One of the big selling points of the
BlackBerry Pearl is the GPS , which applications can use.  I
researched Verizon and Sprint, I'm already a Verizon customer and
decided to go with VErizon because I've been happy with their service
for over 6 years even though it would be $10 more per month.

Verizon is notorious for crippling ^H^H^H^H^H^H^H customizing their
handsets so I dutifully verified I would be able to download any apps
I wanted to the blackberry before buying.  After satisfying myself
that this was a fully functional blackberry on last Friday I went to
Verizon, got a BB Pearl, which extended my contract 2 years.

The three main reasons I passed on the iphone were 1. poor battery
life 2. Apple doesn't permit any vendors to offer navigation software
(which rules out google maps apparently) and 3. it's AT&T.

I immediately noticed that Google maps on the blackberry apparently
sucks.  It can only get my location within 1700 meters, WTF?  And the
VZ navigator ($10 extra per month) does not have half the advertised
features, like the gas price finder, weather, or events info, once
again WTF.  In short order my research reveals that I didn't ask the
right question. I learned that Verizon has fenced off the GPS so that
only their navigator can use it, which means it has the same
navigation restriction that made me pass on the iphone, but even worse
because NO applications can access the GPS.  And oh by the way you
can't run the "latest" version of the VZ navigator on a PDA, so half
the advertised features aren't available, but they promise to have it
available "soon".  Plus the navigator sucks, in one week I had two 1
hour calls to tech support because of corrupted files or incorrect
application permissions.

Bass Turds.  Verizon just lost a 6 year customer who spends over $100
a month.  I returned the blackberry yesterday and as soon as the
contract extension is cancelled I'll be heading over to Sprint, which
sells fully functional, non-crippled blackberries which I have
verified with my brother who has one.

But but but Verizon has the best customer service EVAR!!!!~~
There's nothing more important than customer service!

Not any more. Sprint finally got rid of their CEO and got a new one
who has made making up for their past suckitude in that area a big
priority. In the last few months I've heard nothing be praise for
their customer service (if given by a long-term sprint customer,
usually in a tone of amazement on how things have changed).

Verizon does have the best overall coverage.

(A Verizon cell phone is the one gift I ever opened and coldly said,
"I don't want it, take it back.")

I never understood the concept of a cell phone as a gift, unless the
gift giver will also be paying the monthly bills. the cost of the
phone itself is negligible compared to the service cost.
