Ronald Reagan will go down in history as one of the
greatest world leaders of all-time. You don't have to
like him to recognize that.
He's already recognized by historians as one of the least
distinguished presidents of all time. That won't change.

Then the historians are IDIOTS.

The man won the Cold War.

What were the spoils of that victory, exactly?

Go to the museaum at Fort Knox. See Berlin Wall ... rephrase
question.

I was in Munich, Budapest, Pecs, Szeged and Debrecen the summer
after the wall came down. A marvelous time was had by all.
My friends who have been there recently haven't shared my
enthusiasm.

Whatever political spoils we had in 1990 have long ago been
squandered.

What has the US done to Munich, Budapest, Pecs, Szeged and
Debrecen since then to piss them off?

Reams have been written in an effort to explain this phenomenon,
but I'll summarize my opinion in a few sentences.

We used to (mostly) demonstrate the power and desirability of
dmeocracy. Now it appears that takes too long so we just beat
people up and give it to them whether they're ready for it or not.

We kidnapped people in Germany and Italy, didn't we?

Here is rich off in his own little world writing stuff so utterly
vague as to be useless to the discussion.

Wow, you can't even follow direct answers. Look up
a couple of posts, directly about this, and see
where somebody asked "What has the US done to Munich...
to piss them off?"

LINK?

What problem are you having with this? I can't wait to
see what problem Enright has with it.

You know good and damned well that, with such an outrageous
accusation, I'm not going to take your word for it.

You should not even pretend to discuss this subject if you
don't even know the obvious facts.

Dude...

YOU brought the subject up. And, when you DID, I asked WTF you were
talking about. And, NO, these facts aren't "obvious."

1) I see no mention of Italy.

2) Nor was he kidnapped from Germany. So, your statement is wrong on
the face of it.

3) The Macedonian authorities basically gave him over to the CIA (as
the Tanzanian authorities did for the other man Laid Saidi who is
mentioned).

4) If you dig into the references, the German Government is complicit
in this case. El-Masri says so himself.

"AI: You describe an interrogator named "Sam," who knew much about
your life and about Islam in general. Do you know who "Sam" could be?

KM: Sam was definitely a German; I can say that for sure just from the
way he spoke and the sorts of things he knew. Since I've come back,
I've identified him through photographs and a police lineup-I can say
with 95 percent certainty that he was a German intelligence agent. Of
course, he denies that he was involved. He says he was somewhere else.
Right now the matter is under investigation by the German attorney
general's office."

and

"AI: Do you believe that the role of the German government in your
abductionwill ever be exposed?

KM: Yes, I am sure it will. But an explanation won't come from the
government or from the lawyers working for the government. The real
work has to be done by human rights organizations, journalists, lawyers
and politicians from the opposition. The government, meanwhile, is
really trying its best to defend itself-they've denied that they ever
knew anything."
