Planting a tree locks a few hundred
pounds of carbon down.

What happens when a tree dies? It rots, eventually releasing the same
amount of carbon it absorbed. Trees act sorta like capacitors. They
store carbon, but not indefinitely.

Perhaps you'll note that the NE forests behave a bit like a carbon sink.
The only problem is that they are only absorbing the same amount of carbon
as when those forests were originally cut down. Net gain: zero.

Or, the amount of carbon stored in forests is trivial compared to the
amount of carbon released by fossile fuels.
