My Friends Rock

One of my friends is a computer tech - mostly a networking specialist.

Last month, he called me up and asked if I wanted a new processor for
my old-style (Socket 478) motherboard. I had a 1.8 GHz Willamette P4
in it and he wanted to install a 2.4 GHz Northwood P4 [1]. I said,
"Sure."

When I asked him what he wanted for it, he said, "I dunno. Ten bucks?
[2]" I said, "Okay." Then he came by and installed it. We went to
another friend's house after that.

A couple of days ago, he called me up and asked me if I wanted a new
graphics card to replace my tired old ATI AIW 8500DV. I asked what it
was and how much he wanted. He said it was an ATI AIW 9800 Pro [3]
and he wanted dinner for it. I said, "Okay. I have a hankering for a
good steak, so let's go to a steakhouse." Right now, he plans to come
by Saturday and we're going to install the new memory, the new hard
drive (both from the upcoming New Egg Rocks post), the video card and
a firewire card [4].

You've gotta love your friends.

So, in summation, I got a faster processor, I'll quadruple my main
memory (currently 512K), I get a much better video card and a huge HD
- all installed - for $200 plus a steak dinner.

[1] Obtained from a TS&R where the motherboard was bad and the
customer said to get a new motherboard and CPU.

[2] He lives in North County (I live in South County) and that's about
the cost of the gas he used to come down for the install and then go
back.

[3] Obtained when an old GF scrapped her old computer.

[4] The AIW 8500 DV has a firewire port that I use and the AIW 9800
Pro is sans port, so, with the 8500 gone, I need to install a firewire
card. I already had it lying around.
