So when I logged into my online Discover card account this morning I
got the following message:
"A Discover Card with a new account number has been mailed to you as a
replacement to the card you currently carry. Your account number has
changed as part of a systems upgrade that offers you even more
benefits, such as, enhanced security monitoring on your account to
help detect fraud earlier."
That sounds like bullshit to me. I didnt ask for any change on my card
-- it sounds like they had a security breach and now need to change
account numbers for people whose account numbers were stolen. (I have
not seen any fraudulent activity on my account, fwiw....)
If it were a system-wide upgrade it seems like everyone's account
numbers would change. Have any of you other rsfckers who use discover
gotten this notification?
Nope. But then again, I have had mine change about four times due
to loss or fraud.
One day I was purchasing a computer at a MicroCenter (a common occurrence
for me as a business owner), passed over my Discover, and the clerk
said "excuse me, sir -- may I see some identification?"
I passed over my driver's license, and he said "I'm sorry, I can't take
this card. Your name isn't on it." I looked at it, and the name said
"Veronica Cook".
I looked her up on the net, and found a phone number. Turns out she
was a customer at the same pharmacy I use, and the clerk had both of
our cards at the same time, handing back the wrong platinum Discover
card to each of us.
What is more bizaare is that it had happened three weeks earlier, and each
of us had used the card successfully many times since then. Our charges
were within $20.00 of each other at about $350 each. (I think I had $365,
and her $343.)
The guy who runs the pharmacy is a friend of mine, and boy did I have a
good time giving him the business on that one!
