Simple question: Is this a good idea that you'd support or a stupid one that you wouldn't (I'm assuming of course, that (1) you would support a good idea and wouldn't support a stupid one, and (2) you agree the idea is not a "neutral" one...)?
It's amusing how you turned what you said was going to be a simple
question into a complicated, multi-branched one.
To answer your question, I think that it is a failed brainstorming
attempt to warn others of a health care risk while maintaining the
freedom of movement for the victims. How DO you warn potential
partners that this person has a deadly disease and yet maintain the
carrier's privacy and freedoms? It is a prickly question.
Way to go obfuscating and weaseling your way out of a straight answer. I'm fully aware of the times and circumstances under which the statement was made. But contrary to what you say there's nothing prickly about the question - it's pretty straightforward: is it a stupid idea? And in a civilized and free society, the answer is an unequivocal yes. Hell, even Enright (in the middle of all his hand-wringing) had no hesitation in labeling it dumb.
And, yet, how many people would be alive today if Gaetan Dugas had
told his partners *before* they had sex that he had "the gay cancer"?
It was a tragedy. But such tragedies are the price we pay for living in a free and open society as opposed to a fascist state.
