in February?

I received a notice that I have a letter waiting from the IRS for
pickup at the post office. It might be an audit, but as far as I know
those come in the latter part of the year. Some background
infromation:

1. I have never received any letter from the IRS before.
2. I moved (within same state) in August of last year. Since it is
within 12 months, USPS should be forwarding all my mail. So for sure I
have not received anything in the last year.
3. I have already filed my tax return for this year, and I received
my electronic refund already.

They have a question from about three years ago on some grey area you
claimed, or missing a 1099 or 1098, or your being audited. Failure to
pick it up doesn't mean *** to them, you've been served!!

i don't think so.. I got one of those "we are reviewing your 2004 return"
letters this year.. they didn't send it certified mail, it just showed up in
regular mail 4 times..seriously every correspondence with them came back in
groups of 4.

And oh.. here's how they do it.. they had already reviewed my return and
decided that I owed them some unpayable amount and I had two choices, 1) Pay
it or 2) provide all the reciepts for all the deductions that I claimed and
they would re-figure it.... we chose option 2.

Our accountant sent them her records, they re-figured and low and behold,
they found an error and that they overcharged me $13.48 in 2004. If that
had been an error in their favor, i would have owned them penalty's and
interest on that amount.. because its on my side.. I get to right off an
extra $13.48 this year.. thanks..

My favorite story along those lines was the "mail audit" my live-in
girlfriend (and now wife) had received because she claimed half of our
mortgage interest deduction. Even though both of our names were on
the form from the bank, mine was listed first so they wanted proof she
had paid too. We mailed in an explanation and that was that.

Funny thing, they didn't ask me why I didn't claim all of the
deduction. I guess they were willing to let that little "error" slip
by.
