We're also overdue for an earth polarity shift.
It's actually already started. People have noticed a decrease in the
earth's magnetic field (by 5% according to Wikipedia - I had thought 10%
but I'm not a geophysicist). Here's the article:
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earth%27s_magnetic_field>
While it won't affect us personally, a nonmagnetic earth would have
great affects for our descendants. The "northern lights" and "southern
lights" occur because charged ions are routed to the poles by the
Earth's magnetic field and then interact with the atmosphere.
Without a magnetic field, everywhere on the earth would be equally
affected. Similarly, satellites would be wrecked by the solar wind.
