I no longer have normal nightmares. I learned how to "just
wake up" from a bad dream after seeing Jaws when I was eight
or nine years old. The only nightmares I have are when I
can't wake up. There's no monster or person that is a direct
threat. Just some vague sense something is wrong or a sound
that is not normal. Half the time I'm home all alone, and
hearing a door slam in your not-sleep is quite disturbing.
Heh, when I was a kid, I learned (somehow) to literally force my eyes open
to wake from nightmares. I'm not exactly sure how this worked, but it did,
since you're not supposed to be able to do that. I was a frequent
sleep-walker/talker as a kid, though, so that might have something to do
with it.
I'm able to discern that I'm just dreaming and conciously
decide to wake up.
My nightmares are along similar lines. Funny that in violent nightmares as
a kid, it was the typical "I can't out-run the monster" type dreams, but in
the rare violent nightmares I have now, I'm like freaking RAMBO and I kick
ass.
I sometimes do that, but it has to be plausible. It's more
like I'm mocking a dude in a monster costume or something.
"YOU WANNA FSCK WITH ME?! COME AND GET IT!"
The fact that the dreams are my family being threatened probably has
something to do with it. When I wake up, I always have the "I can't believe
I did that to that guy" feeling.
Most of my disturbing dreams are about being in some distant, and
unfamiliar, yet strangely familiar place, and sometimes I forget that I no
longer drive and have to find my way "back home" driving, but lately, I
remember in my dreams that I don't drive, so I'm walking, seemingly forever,
in dark, strange, country areas. Sometimes I'm lost in a freaking shopping
mall, and I'm always late for something, have to be somewhere, but I don't
know where the hell I am.
You can never really go home again.
