This is strictly from an ancient memeory, so it may be completely wrong.
I remember 3 different balls, a high school ball with full stripes, a
college ball with half stripes, and a pro ball with no stripes. The
difference being that each ball was slightly skinnier than the last, making
for an easier passing game.
If you dig down into this article, you will see that the NFL only used
white stripes for one game...Super Bowl VIII.
In 1951, the NFL actually used a white football for night games...
