Why do they do it? Why aren't they just honest?
I don't understand. I never lied about anything as a student, although
I also never turned in anything late, either, as an undergraduate.
In graduate school, when I had to turn in something late, I just told
the instructor the truth: why is that so hard for an 18-year old kid
to do nowadays?
I'm sick of being lied to; it's academic fraud in my eyes if they
misrepresent the truth to an instructor in order to get an advantage
on an assignment.
What can I do? I tell the student not to lie to me, and depending on
the department rules, I drop or flunk them out of my class.
People lie because they have learned that they will most likely get
away with it...either they won't be called on it, or if they are, they
can argue a technicality and receive some sort of lenient response.
People are uncomfortable with admitting the truth, for a variety of
reasons, so they lie to hedge their bets.
If there are rules on an assignment, adhere to them. If there is
question, grade accordingly. If there is no doubt, grade accordingly
or do not accept the assignment. I know there is probably a lot more
to this than what I wrote, but that is how I would view it based on my
experience from college. Yes, there are acceptable reasons for being
late...but most of the time, it wasn't really due to overwork or lack
of time.
Last year, my daughter started "forgetting" her homework and making
excuses about why she did not bring it home. The problem continued,
even when we implored her to remember it. So, we implemented a rule
that she could do other things after her homework was complete. If
the homework was "forgotten," she came home, ate dinner and went to
bed. Coincidently...and apparently by the grace of God, her memory
greatly improved after one instance.
