People who think they're cooler than they really are

Where do they get their sense of self-delusion? Is it some Stuart
Smalley-like mantra?
I am as happy as the next person when someone has a solid level of
self-confidence. I think too many people lack self-confidence,
actually. But some people seem to conjure it up out of thin air when
there is no reason to have it:
1 -- They suck at their jobs, but for some reason are still allowed to
keep the job;
2 -- They are dumb. Not just stupid, but DUMB;
3 -- They are walking caricatures, and they don't even realize it;
I could go on, but you get the point.
Wow.
Me? I follow a simple rule: take my job seriously, never take myself
too seriously. I know my strengths and weaknesses; I also know I am
cursed with a high level of self-awareness as well, thanks to my
mother's firm hand in my upbringing. I know what's what, and I don't
lie to myself to make myself feel better. Nor do I expect other people
to lie to me to make myself feel better.
[P.S. I also know it's not my job to smack people down to reality, so
I just ignore them most of the time, but other times, I just have to
laugh and spit my morning beverage out through my nose at their
ridiculousness!]
