I was basically told "We can't tell." in answer to the question "Is it
cancer?"
The oncologist regarded this, rightly, as good news, but it's still
damned frustrating. Additionally, lymphoma was ruled out - which is
also good news.
The upshot is that I am being referred to the Siteman Cancer Center at
Barnes/Jewish Hospital (Washington University Medical School) for
resection (newfangled doctor speak for "removal") of the pancreatic
mass. He said I should be seen within two weeks.
I was, finally, able to get the oncologist to show me the CT scans and
explain what we were looking at (I have a CD with the scans on them,
but the slice view of a CT scan is very disconcerting, IMO, to a
medical layperson). The mass is actually pretty damned big.
It sounds like you are getting some reasonable advice. You definitely
want to have the mass removed even if it is totally benign. Of course
resection is the best way for the pathologists to determine what it
exactly is.
The appointment at Siteman has been set for Monday, August 27th at
Noon.
I see the urologist (I still have kidney stones to deal with as well
[1]) Friday at 2:15 PM.
[1] Had a very bad attack of renal colic Sunday night/Monday morning,
probably the worst one yet. I hadn't had one since before I got out
of the hospital.
