What should I look for in when choosing an oncologist for a pancreatic
tumor?
First, make sure you've got it (I hope not),
Thanks.
and then find a
Cancer Center that specializes in pancreatic...it's worth it even if
you have to travel.
The Siteman Cancer Center here at Barnes in St. Louis seems to boast
pretty big about their program. And Barnes is a US News Top Ten
Hospital.
If you have pancreatic, you need to find a cancer center that
specializes in pancreatic. Screw the boasting or the top
rating.....
WashU specializes in every kind of cancer.....they are one of the top
5-10 academic medical centers in the country. I'm sure they have
dozens of extremely impressive surgical oncologists on staff, many of
which deal with pancreatic and GI cancers routinely.
Probably be a good idea to make sure, rather than assume.
surgonc by it's nature is an academic specialty.
pancreatic is bad news....you would need all the help you
can get.
Sometimes(well actually usually) the "help" with pancreatic cancer is
palliative. You read stories about how people will be referred to a
large academic center for an evaluation to see if there is a chance
for resection of a primary pancreatic tumor, then when they learn
resection is not an option they will go on a wild goose chase hoping
for something...anything....to give them a shot.
