Re: Desktop PCs...What has changed?

I've only owned laptops for the past few years, so I'm kind of "out of
touch" with the desktop world. My mom is wanting to buy a new desktop
system. Her current one is a hand-me-down from me, running Windows 98.
She needs a newer operating system to run Voice Recognition Software
and, apparently, the Windows Vista systems have their own Voice
Recognition Software. After their embarrassing debut, I guess the bugs
have been worked out and it's pretty decent, as far as accuracy. (If
that doesn't work, we have Dragon "Naturally Speaking" in queue as a
back-up plan.)

So... yes, we're doing Windows-based....don't try to convince me to
buy a Mac for my 66-year-old mother. What's good now? (Brands-wise...)
I don't need tech specs--I'm good at figuring that out for myself. I
want something reliable. My daughter's Sony Vaio laptop has kicked
much a$$, in terms of reliability and stability. My IBM
ThinkPad...reliable, but temperamental. My mom's desktop is a 1998
Gateway, made back when Gateway was still strictly mail-order-- it has
run *perfectly* for her, as it did for me when it was mine. But I know
all has changed with Gateway....sounds like Dell quality has declined,
too. I'm ascairt of HP as I've had bad experiences.... Compaq seems
uber cheap.... haven't I wiped out pretty much everyone there? (Like I
said, it's been a long time since I've even looked at a desktop.)

TIA!
Peach

We just bought a used Mac on Ebay for about $250 and my weiner kids
were making movies of themselves on the first day we pulled it out the
box. They're editing, inserting cool effects, and generally having a
ball with it. I am still using the 5 year old Dell--the Mac is just
too purdy for me to try.
