Update for Mia

About 18 months ago I responded to a post of yours shown at the bottom
of this post.
Last Sunday, I had to get an electrical problem fixed in my home
before it could be sold. It had to be done by Friday. I called the
husband of the woman I used to work with that I mentioned below. He
is an electrician who has been the sole proprietor of his own business
for 50 years. (He is 75 years old.) He said that he would come out
right away and fix the problem.
Today he spent four hours here. When he was done, he gave me a bill
and charged me only for his supplies - $45. I asked him how the
business was going and he told me that the business is officially
closing at the end of June and that I was his final customer. I
congratulated him and told him that I was proud to be he final
customer.
When I asked him what he was going to do in his retirement, he told me
that they had just bought a new house that they were fixing up, and
donated the "outbuildings" to a new church that they helped to start
five years ago. He was using the proceeds from the dissolution of his
business to back a bank loan that the church needed to take out. And
let me tell you this - when his wife retired about 8 years ago, she
told me that the only thing they had to fund their retirement was
their social security and the equity he built up in his business.
So I am sorry that some people who watch television shows that you
find beneath you can't be friends of yours. You miss out on not only
some nice, substantive people who really give you faith in humanity,
but you also miss out on a deal when you need an electrician. I am
going tomorrow to get them a nice gift certificate to their favorite
restaurant even though it is only a small token compared to what they
have given me.
Have a nice day.
Jon

If I know someone semi-well and don't mind spending time with them from
time to time, them mentioning that they've seen a whole episode of
"Walker: Texas Ranger" would probably change that.
When I think of "Walker: Texas Ranger" I smile. The reason being
that
someone I used to work with used to go out every Friday (Saturday??)
evening with her husband for a fish fry and beer, and come home and
watch that very show together. I liked her. We didn't have much in
common, but she was very nice, very amusing and very wise.
