Charlie Sykes is a conservative talk show host in Milwaukee. His
mother died in a house fire earlier this week. Mike McGee, a former
Black Panther and host of his own radio show, said the following on
his show yesterday:
"...a woman that had a fool like that deserves whatever's comin' to
her, 'cause she raised a sure enough idiot....My instincts say Charlie
Sykes killed his mommy. He got tired a waitin' for that money."
Much more offensive than "nappy headed ho," but he won't be losing his
'job.
The fact that Glenn Beck still has a job shows that Imus's firing
really was an overreaction.
Seehttp://mediamatters.org/items/200605030014formany nasty quotes.
I'll post just one here:
"[T]his is horrible to say, and I wonder if I'm alone in this -- you
know, it took me about a year to start hating the 9-11 victims'
families? Took me about a year."
Here is the rest of their list...
"On antiwar protestor Cindy Sheehan: "That's a pretty big prostitute."
Also on Cindy Sheehan: She is "pimping out the tragedy of her own
son's death for her own agenda."
On former President Jimmy Carter: "Is there a bigger waste of skin
than Jimmy Carter?"
On a Nigerian public information campaign to fight bird flu: "They've
actually resorted to radio jingles. ... Are we as dumb as Nigeria?"
To the 7-year old African-American author of a controversial poem:
"You want to go to Africa? I will personally purchase your airfare."
On immigration protests: Mexico "is a country that has been overtaken
by lawbreakers from the bottom to the top. And now, what you're
protesting for is to have lawbreakers come here."
Responding to criticism of his remarks on immigration protests: "[I]
pretty much stand by" the assertion that "Mexico is run by nothing but
criminals."
On American Indians in South Dakota considering skirting a state ban
on abortion: They "will have found something that can be more
profitable than casinos, and that's abortion clinics."
Suggesting "politically correct" names for bunker-buster nuclear
weapons: "[B]utterfly bomb," "climate-control device," "[b]omb de
tropical. ... We could use that one in Venezuela."
On immigrants entering illegally from Mexico: Either "they're
terrorists," "they're escaping the law," or "[t]hey can't make a
living in their own dirtbag country." "
I dont see much to get worked up there. I've never listened to Beck,
but even taken out of context as these quotes were, there is nothing
there even close to Imus' stupid comments.
Is that all ya got?
Matter of opinion, I suppose, given that I find most of these more
offensive than Imus's comments, even when considering the context.
For example, the 7-year old black girl who wrote the poem "White
Nationalism Put U in Bondage" has said about it: "Even the ones [white
people] that try to fix up with us, they're still devils. I feel
they're devils and they should be gone. We should be away from them
and still be in Africa."
Beck's response: "I will gladly send you a ticket. You want to go to
Africa? I will personally purchase your airfare. I'll do it. It's one-
way. You have to sign a contract that you will never return to the
United States."
1. I don't agree with the girl, but believe she has the right to
express the point (obvious).
2. I don't agree with Beck, but believe he has the right to express
the point (obvious).
3. Beck's response actually makes no sense (should be obvious) because
the girl doesn't say she wants to go to Africa now. She expresses a
hypothetical -- if things had been different, we would be in Africa
now.
4. Beck's response is more offensive than Imus's because he's frickin'
picking on a 7-year old girl! That's pretty classless and crass!
