Sadly, a university president's job these days is largely that
of being "Chief Marketing Officer". The school's name is its
brand name, and it's your job to sell that brand to everyone -
politicians, corporate bigwigs, the general public, etc. Anyone
who can help you vacuum in as much money as possible, 24/7. And
while that involves a lot of things, one aspect that stands out
is avoiding/minimizing negative publicity. A president has to
be a champ at damage control, spin doctoring, and impression
management.

If i had to bet, i'd guess that Steger's mindset around 8am
monday morning was something like this: "holy ***, a
double-murder on campus? we just had that morva manhunt in
august, and the media is going to be filled with stories that
give the impression that VT is an unsafe place to be, a kiss of
death for raising money. So if my cops say that they have a
prime suspect and the situation is under control, then i'm not
going to question that. No need to press the panic button; that
will just make the situation seem like an even bigger event and
attract even more negative publicity. Let's keep a lid on as
much as possible".

Face it Jaros, you are in the clear minority on this issue.

lol. what makes you think that makes an iota of difference?

Because you're rong?

Since i'm right, it's impossible for me to be rong.

And yet you are still rong. You are even more ronger on this than
the liberals here are rong on politics.

why are you defending the indefensible?

Because what you feel was indefensible isn't.

ok, defend focusing almost entirely on the flimsy bf "lead" while
failing to sweep the campus.

The probabilities state that if a girl appears to have been killed, the
first suspect is the boyfriend/husband. Your first thought is not that
there is a mass murderer on the loose that is going to kill 30 more
people. That is insanity. You don't and can't lock down a campus the
size of VT even in two hours because you have a murder, especially one
that you have a gun-toting boyfriend as a suspect for.

You are making some wide assumptions based on hindsight that just don't
work in reality. Sure, if they had known they had a mass murderer on
their hands, they could have attempted to find him, even though that
wouldn't necessarily have a good chance of succeeding. If Cho had
thought the cops were on to him, I'm sure he would have just started
killing whoever was closest to him, whether it was his own dorm or
buildings nearby.

What you are arguing for is unrealistic in even the best circumstances.
Other rsfckers have attempted to explain this to you, but for some
reason your stubborness or pride won't allow you to admit that you are
wrong.

I suspect that overreactions to VaTech (and to copycats) will
see a typical reaction more like Jaros' than would have
happened before VaTech. That's part of the Police State that
Jaros wants us all to live in.
