What if Republican Senator Had Been Busted With Gun?

So we have this interesting situation in which an aide to Sen. Jim Webb
of Virginia is arrested carrying a gun into the Capitol building. The
initial story is that the senator asked the aide to take his bag which
contained the gun to Webb's home, but didn't mention the gun, and the
aide decided to drop by the office first. That's where he got caught
going through security...

The senator is largely getting a pass on this, as I think he probably
should. But let's just suppose a slightly different set of circumstances.

Suppose there was a hardcore Republican senator who opposed a war policy
of a Democrat president. I know, you have to imagine a Democrat going to
war, but let's say it's possible...

The reason I devise this comparison is that I think Webb is right to
carry a gun, and he also has a right to do so. But I think there would be
far more made of this issue if the political affiliation were reversed.

It is obvious, except to the most ideologically ravaged, that this is (1)
a throwaway dig at Democrats and (2) he's speaking of today in Washington
and (3) he's talking about gun control, not the Democratic party
specifically.

Gibson is setting the up a hypothetical situation wherein it becomes
known that an anti-war Republican Senator in a Democratic war
administration is routinely carrying heat around town, and what the
reaction would be from the press and punditry.

He's not "reporting". He's not claiming that _no_ Democrat has _ever_
led the Nation to war. He's making a parenthetical statement that you'd
have to imagine this today.

I know I've made my share of gaffes, misstatement and plain old memory
lapses in this here chatrum; but it would be really nice if before a
poster comes foaming at the mouth to rave about "lies", they would make
sure they had the actual quotes in front of them and not third-hand
information from a partisan blog.
