A few points and things that have been irritating me:

1) I am so tired of the "I was just so bored in high school" line. Or
the "how do you expect my kid to do well when he's not being
challenged" line. Are some kids bored in high school? Sure. Some of
the bored ones are good students and some of the bored ones are bad
students. Likewise some of the interested students are bad students
and some of them are good students. Whether you're kid is bored or
not, being bored/"not challenged" is not an excuse for mediocre
academic performance. If you're kid is making B's and C's now and
you're complaining that he's not "being challenged", tell your kid to
actually show some mastery over the unchallenging/boring stuff before
he starts complaining. 99% of the time the line "he's just not being
challenged" is a cop-out excuse.

You have no idea what you are talking about. A person that I know
very well had a very poor HS resume. He decided he didn't want to do
English so he skipped it. He had to take English 11 again in 12th
grade. In his math/science classes, he often skipped the homework but
aced the tests. When he went to college and took only the classes he
wanted to, he got really good grades. Now, he's a programmer for JPL/
NASA. Despite his mediocre (or actually worse than mediocre) time in
HS, he's really done well in his life. I'd argue he's done much
better than me, who was the never get out of the book / 4.0 HS
student, who had to work to understand things back then.

there are always exceptions.......in large part you'll find that
people who don't do well in high school either generally don't go to
college or don't excel in college or go to a junior college/tech
school type of college(after all with their poor high school
performance they couldnt have gone to good colleges) and it really
doesn't pan out for them there.

Most all the people I can remember from high school who were really
good students in high school(top ten in their class, national merit
scholars, etc) are in the process or doing well for themselves......

Last I checked magnet universities and better colleges weren't looking
for high school students who made B's and C's in high school because
they were bored....they are looking for students with excellent grades
and excellent test scores.

Yes, but you of the Valdosta State undergrad career should realize
that where you go to college doesn't define what you do in your life.
Both the person I am talking about and I went to small respected
engineering schools for undergrad. Mine required you to be in the top
10% in HS and have good scores. His didn't. His still had good
placement into careers after college. I know many people in my field
who are now professors at major research universities who didn't start
out such presitgious institutions themselves. I have no idea how they
did in HS.
