the kid can spend time with his parents when they get home from
work.......
And what does that work out to be when both parents are working? For a
1-year old who pretty much sleeps through the night, he may see a
parent for 1 hour in the morning and say 2 hours in the evening before
bed time. For the other 9 hours that the kid has been awake, he has
been taken care of by a non-parent. For us, this was a no-brainer for
my wife to stay at home. Neither one of us wanted it any other way.
Every situation is different, but developmental costs vs. financial
costs should be weighed carefully and critically, and the child's
development should be placed abouve the adult's career development,
IMO.
I completely agree. I know of friends' kids that go to daycare at 7am
and get picked up around 7pm. They go to bed at 8 and get up at 6.
Not a lot of quality time there. Its not for everyone, but it IS for
me. While some CANT afford it, others CHOOSE not to afford it instead
affording a big new house and lots of toys. We had a couple tight
years, but nothing too extreme. Actually, we live better than our
parents did. Now we've turned the corner and are building our new
house starting some time this year.
