They did a great job snuffing out a very serious plot and took
appropriate corrective action. Yeah, it will be a pain not taking
liquids or gels on a flight, but everyone can deal with it.
However if not "going about our business" what are we to do?
And the war on terror continues to get dissed as some Bush / Blair
warmongering gleefest.
That's probably because they turned it into one. When they wrapped
Iraq into the same war, they lost a lot of legitimacy with a great
number of people.

I read that the same thing was tried back in '92 to try and blow up
several aircraft over the Pacific. We didn't go into full-panic "no
liquids on flights" mode then.
Actually it was 1995, and I'll give you the benefit of the doubt that
you didn't purposely misplace the date to avoid acknowledging that a
major terrorist plot was foiled during the presidency of a Democrat
who managed to follow the rule of law, and also managed to resist
turning it into a re-election theme, a reason to invade an oil-rich
country that his daddy had a grudge against, and to tar his political
opponents as traitors.
Yes, I was pulling the date out of memory, so I'm lucky to be within
three years.
I don't know where you got your information about how the plot was
busted, but it wasn't by police work. According to Wikipedia:

Oplan Bojinka

Oplan Bojinka was a planned large-scale attack on airliners in 1995.
The term can refer to the "airline bombing plot" alone, or that combined
with the "Pope assassination plot" and the "CIA plane crash plot". The
first refers to a plot to destroy 11 airliners on January 21 and 22,
1995, the second refers to a plan to kill Pope John Paul II on January
15, 1995, and the third refers a plan to crash a plane into the CIA
headquarters in Fairfax County, Virginia and other buildings. Oplan
Bojinka was prevented on January 6 and 7, 1995, but some lessons learned
were apparently used by the planners of the September 11 attacks. This
article will cover all three plans.
Discovery and Termination of Oplan Bojinka
All times mentioned are in Manila, Philippines time.
The plot was abandoned after an apartment fire occurred during the night
in Manila, Philippines on Friday, January 6, 1995.
The fire occurred before the Pope, John Paul II, was scheduled to visit
the Philippines on January 12. Also, a typhoon had hit Manila not that
long before the fire. The incident took place at the six-story Doña
Josefa apartments.
The end result
U.S. investigators would apparently not find the connection with Khalid
Sheik Mohammed to Al Qaida until several years later.
Khalid Shaikh Mohammed decided that explosives were too risky to use in
his next plot. He decided to take Phase II and make it into a new attack.
The leadership of the organization Al-Qaida, which he belonged to, loved
the idea of using airplanes in attacks. The plot would become known as
the September 11, 2001 attacks. Khalid Sheikh Mohammed would be arrested
in Rawalpindi, Pakistan in 2003.

So I imagine the reason no politician in the US tried to make use of the
busting of the plot is that no US authority had anything to do with it.
It was a flook fire that exposed them, and then regular police work
discovered all the evidence. No intel sources, no phone taps, no
informant -- just plain bad luck.
And as for following the "rule of law":
"For sixty-seven days, he [Abdul Hakim Murad] endured a torture process
that Filipino investigators called "tactical interrogation", or "TI".
According to journalists Marites Vitug and Glenda Gloria, authors of the
book Under the Crescent Moon, agents hit him with a chair and long piece
of wood when Murad didn't talk. They forced water into his mouth, and
crushed out lit cigarettes on his genitals. Murad's ribs were completely
cracked. Agents were surprised that he survived. According to an
investigator, he finally confessed out of fear of Jews after an agent
masquerading as the Mossad told him that he was being sent to Israel."
Maybe we should skip rendition and just threaten all the Gitmo prisoners
with the Mossad, and tell 'em we're shipping them off to Israel too.
