Since early June, I have been in a new job, telecommuting. I love
working from home. I roll out of bed, get some coffee, sit down at my

What I don't love is the back pain that has started to become a daily
reminder of the fact that my body is not accustomed to sitting in a
chair for many hours at a time.

Have any of you run into such a thing, and what did you do about it?
Did anything help? I've got a decent chair, and I have started using a
"back support/rest" cushion thing.

I'd buy one of those Aeron chairs.. but damn those things are expensive.

Ideas?

Somewhere - OSHA? - is a list of ergonomic recommendations for setup,
posture, etc.

In general, it's something like this.

Your chair should be positioned where your legs are approximately 90
degrees at the knee when your thighs are parallel to the floor.

Typically, you should sit on the forward half of the seat w/o actually
resting your back against the chair. More than anything, this forces
you to use good posture which lets your body hold itself up the way it
was designed.

With your upper arms hang relaxed and your forearms perpendicular to
the floor, your hands should rest just above your keyboard - so you
can type with your fingers curled in the ready position. Effectively,
setting your keyboard at waist level, almost against your waist. Also,
a wrist rest is a good thing.

Your monitor is supposed to be at eye level when your head is raised
and you are looking straight ahead. You should be looking at the upper
3rd of the display in this position. I don't remember exactly, but I
think the monitor is supposed to be about 16" away from your face.

In short, if your upper back hurts, adjust your monitor. If your lower
back, adjust your seating. If your wrists, forearms, hands, adjust
your keyboard location.
