while Mike Tranghese fiddles with basketball contracts, the football
conference burns.

I read the message board replies and I am basically confused at what
you think Tranghese could have done in this case. The problem the Big
East seems to have is a couple of teams with solid tradition that
travel well (WVU and Syracuse) and a bunch of either unknowns or proven
disasters travel wise.

I mean, if I were the Big East schools, I'd be happy with him that they
were able to keep their BCS bid. That will bring in more money than a
bowl in Charlotte ever will.

In and of itself, I don't think it's the end of the world. Big East
football school fans just see this news as further proof that he is
wholly devoted to the Big East as a basketball conference and has
unending loyalty to the basketball-onlys at the expense of the football
schools. This coming from his comments that there will never be a
conference split because of the basketball contract

How lucractive was the basketball contract? I haven't followed it that
closely. However that's being very short-sighted. Basketball money
always seems to keep the BE football schools from doing the right
thing, and then that basketball money always turns out to be peanuts in
the long run compared to the missed opportunity for all other sports.
For example in 1994 it was NCAA "points" that prevented the split, but
a few years later that money turned out to be peanuts compared to what
football was bringing in, and could still be if they had formed the
all-sports conference then (assuming that conference would have been
able to keep VT and Miami). The BE football schools would have been
better off to leave the conference and the points behind, but instead
they stuck around for a few hundred thousand dollars a year. But they
didn't see that then, when it was time to act. Hopefully they won't
make the same mistake again.

Also, the BE tinhatters say that this new bowl
arrangement has ACC commissioner Swofford's fingerprints all over it,
because he has previuosly shown that he has a lot of influence with the
Tire Bowl committee folks, not to mention that Navy's AD is an ex-BC
guy.

This wouldn't surprise me, after all the Charlotte Bowl is right in the
middle of ACC country and depends heavily on ACC attendance and
interest to avoid becoming another Emerald bowl. However, Charlotte's
not too happy about not getting any ACC basketball tournaments for the
next 10 years, and rumors are the ACC is going to have to have one or
two football championship games there soon to placate them. Which is
probably where that game belongs anyway.

No brass tacks details yet, but here's what they are saying:

The thing I'm hearing via the grapevine (I could have heard it wrong
BTW) is that the football schools are getting 15million, and the
basketball-onlys are getting 10million.
