Now normalize it.

The US Department of Energy should be throwing huge amounts of money
at this or any other alternative energy solution that is economical.

Not at this one.

Natural gas has a lower energy density than does gasoline on a weight
basis. To have a vehicle that has a range over perhaps 100 miles
would take a very large, very high pressure fuel tank. (I've driven
a vehicle that ran on CNG, and in driving about 20 miles, I drained
well over half a tank that took up about 1/3 of a pickup truck bed.)
To get natural gas to be a reasonable fuel, it would have to be added
to the vehicle at a pressure that would liquefy it. To have a vessel
capable of 1)containing that pressure, and 2) not rupturing when some
dumnass runs a red light, causing a massive explosion and killing 40
people, is expensive, and heavy, and would take an awful lot of space
in the car.
Flex fuel vehicles are a good idea. but a fuel that remains a liquid
throughout the normal operating range is a necessity for cost, range,
and safety reasons.

And that's just in the car. Never mind the distribution system. I
sure as hell don't want to live near a self serve natural gas station
with large 50kpsi underground tanks of flammable gas...

Honda Civic..state of California...home fueling stations...check em out.
