I've read in USA Today that less than a third of business travelers
tip. I'd always sort of assumed that those who did left the tip when
they checked out, but based on what you're saying, you tip each day?

I dont travel much anymore...just a few yearly conferences and a few
short vacations. But yeah, I have gotten in the habit of tipping
every day. Its only a few bucks. I spend that much on absolute
worthless crap many times a day. Hell, the local state excise taxes
on the room amount to far more. I dont know. A year or two ago I had
a long drunk talk with a gal that used to clean hotel rooms in
collidge. She convinced me in the same way my brother did about pizza
delivery people, hard crappy underappreciated work, and unlike the
waitstaff at most restaurants, these folks actually appreciate a tip.

This may sound like a strange question, but:

Do you just leave the money neatly sitting on the desk, or do you
actually stick it into an envelope and label it "tip" or something?

As for pizza delivery drivers, I know what you mean. I tip them
*liberally* -- I know exactly how crappy their deal often is, paying gas
and wear and tear out of a sub-minimum wage salary and dealing with
complete cretins all damn shift long.

Saturday, I ordered 12 pizzas from Papa John's in Athens for the members
of the student organization whose annual all-night meeting I'd come back
to attend (http://www.demosthenian.org) -- paid for the pizzas in
advance, asked for them to be delivered between 11:30 and midnight, and
when they arrived, I tipped the driver $20. He was *astonished* -- and
his extreme courtesy and deference showed it. (I couldn't help thinking
that I should have tipped more, even though a $20 tip on an $89.04 order
was certainly not an insult.)
