I'm well aware of the problems of indiscriminate use of antibiotics.
However, indiscriminate use, IMO, is prescribing antibiotics for mild
infections and acne. Or giving someone with an obvious viral infection
antibiotics to appease them or their parents (giving discretion in cases
where secondary bacterial infections are likely and potentially dangerous).
Giving drug addicts with TB a 2 year prescription for antibiotics knowing
full well they are not going to complete the regimen and not bothering to do
followup visits. But the real problem is the widespread prophylactic use of
antibiotics in animal feed.
Back to the point at hand. First, we don't know if antibiotics were even
prescribed in this case (that was the point of my snark on reading
comprehension). But lets go with that assumption. I presume that Jon is like
most males 18-50 in that he doesn't likely go to the doctor when he's
feeling a bit under the weather. I imagine this was a raging and painful
sore throat to make him bother with the hassle of the American medical
system. In such a case, it would be highly remiss for the physician not to
prescribe antibiotics if he had a good inclination that the problem was
Strep. The potential short-term complications and permanent sequelae of a
serious Strep infection would put that doctor in jeopardy of a malpractice
lawsuit if the infection progressed past the throat. You may consider that
indiscriminate use, but I doubt a lot of your experienced collegues would.
