More iPod BS

I've decided to have another go at that piece of crap
known as my iPod. I think the wife is a bit disappointed
that I haven't been using it very often.

So I go on iTunes buy a few more songs, plug the iPod
into the USB port and my experience has told me to
expect a few different reactions from my iPod:

The circle with a diagonal slash through it, the universal
sign for "Don't" blinking on and off with the words "Do not
disconnect" written underneath. This means nothing.
Sometimes it results in the iPod syncing, sometimes not,
sometimes the battery charges sometimes not.

The blinking battery. AFAIK this means it is charging.
Which means it may be charging and it may not be.
I'll go to bed, wake up, put it in my pocket and it will
be dead. Sometimes it lasts a one hour, sometimes
three days. It's a crap shoot.

Okay, the "Update iPod" in iTunes under the "File"
pick is grayed-out, of course, because I want to
update my iPod. Sometimes at the top of iTunes
"Updating iPod" appears. This means that the iPod
is updating, except for when it isn't. In which case
the words may or may not be there.

My question is is there some way to force your iPod
to update? I can plug-in the USB and there may be
some indication it is updating but I never really know.

BTW: The help site, directions and manuals are useless.
Suprise! Nothing to tell me how to monitor the update or
figure-out if an update is actually going on. Most of the
help I find is: "Look at the 'Source' in iTunes pick the name
of your iPod...." of course the name of my iPod is not
in the "Source" list so rsfc them.

BTW: Have I mentioned iPods really, really suck? I
mean they suck. A lot.

BBTW: Also, somehow, about 20 of the songs I purchased
simply vanished. Not there anymore. The names are still
my library but the actual file is gone. That's pretty neat.
A complete search of my system finds nothing.
