A question. Do you have the impression that students have gotten more irresponsible in recent years? That almost seems impossible given some of what I remember as a student, but I find some of my recent students amazing.
There's a student in one of my classes who has been to class about 5 of 25 times. She calls yesterday and leaves a message on my voicemail. Wants to know what she needs to do to catch up for the semester so she can pass. She's about 170 points short of making even a D, and that's with one test left to go. I haven't even bothered to respond. In all honesty, if she walked by me on campus, I don't know that I'd know who she is.
The amazing thing to me is that she's not the only one. Students not really bothering is certainly part of the long history of college. What amazes me lately is the number of students who don't bother, but seem to expect me to allow them to make up significant ground with a few well-chosen extra credits.
Is this a broad phenomenon, or a local thing?
broad phenomenon.
