My comment was in response to the idea that the NYT would call not to
support Alito. It wasn't surprising at the least, especially after the
1985 job application became known. He states that he is against the Roe v.
Wade decision and that is just too much for a liberal organization such as
the NYT to handle.
So, yes, their response was pretty predictable.
